If you are looking for a unique way to add glamor and elegance to your printing project to make it stand out, using stamping foil is the way to go. Stamping is the method of applying metallized sheets or gold leaf to the work surface (paper, cardboard or any other surface). This is done by a stamping machine. The stamping process has two types, hot and cold.

Hot stamping is a special printing process that uses heat, pressure and metallic foil.

You probably come into contact with gold foil every day without even knowing it. You can find it on labels, packaging, and even on objects. Have you seen the brilliant writings on some invitations, certificates, important documents, industrial parts, etc.? This article talks about this product.

In the past, only gold foil was used for this purpose, but today, the unique thing about foil printing is that there is a wide selection of colors. Although the most popular colors are obviously gold and silver foil, stamping foils today come in a variety of colors such as red, blue, green and black, and other effects such as holography and pearlescent, all of which help replicate the effect of precious metals. And this is very important, because people who are a little familiar with stamping may be used to using gold and silver foil, but an effect like red can really surprise them because it’s so different. And with this method, you can remember the color scheme of your brand in the mind of the audience and go beyond the place where your brand is not recognizable.

Different types of Stamping foil:

Metallic foils:

These sheets are the most common types of foils used in the stamping process. They give a classic metallic color to the design and are available in a variety of colors including gold, silver, copper, red, blue, black, etc.

Pigment foils:

Pigment foils create a non-metallic matte or glossy finish on the design. White foil is one of the types of pigmented foils.

Pearlescent foils:

This type of foil gives a beautiful pearly sheen to the design. These foils are translucent.

Holographic foils:

These foils are used to produce a wide variety of patterns and special effects on the layer. To prevent counterfeiting, holographic sheets are usually used.

Hot stamping foil structure

Hot foil generally consists of 5 layers as shown in the figure below. Metallic foil includes all of these 5 layers, but other foils may lack some of these layers depending on their type. For example, in pigmented foil, there is no metallized layer.

  • Polymer film (Carrier): foil base film made of polyester, PET, etc. to protect the bottom layer
  • Release layer: the middle layer between the varnish and the film (due to the easy separation of the film layer from the surface)
  • Varnish: This layer is created on the foil in order to create the desired shade.
  • Metallization: in order to create a metallic effect
  • Glue: the task of sticking the foil to the work surface
